I qualified as a medical practitioner in 1978 having studied at King's College Hospital School of Medicine, University of London. During my training I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry (1975). I began my specialisation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1980 and passed the membership examination of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist in London in 1986. In the same year, I submitted and passed my MD thesis to the University of London. I was made Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1998.
I was appointed Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer (subsequently Honorary Clinical Associate Professor) in the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Royal Free Hospital in June 1990 and have worked there until my retirement in September 2021. Prior to that I worked as Clinical Lecturer in the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Oxford. I was also appointed Consultant Gynaecologist to the King Edward VII Hospital Sister Agnes in London in 1991. I stopped clinical practice in 2023 but remain on the GMC register and am continuing with my medico-legal practice.
I have more than 43 years experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including over 31 as a Consultant. My special interests are in the area of minimal access surgery (endoscopic surgery), including laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, vaginal surgery and surgery for uterine fibroids. Between 1989 and 2011, I was involved in the organisation of regular postgraduate workshops and other courses on minimal access surgery, including laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, and vaginal surgery.
I have published more than 200 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and more than 50 chapters in books and proceedings, including a chapter on "Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy" in the last two editions of a major postgraduate textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Dewhurst's Textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology).
